Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong met with visiting Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong on Friday to discuss further cooperation in education and technology between the two countries.
During the meeting, Liu said that China and Singapore are good neighbors and good friends. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1990, the two countries, which have made significant progress in bilateral relations, have maintained constant high- level communication and well-coordinated in international and regional affairs. Cooperations in economic, technological and educational fields, especially in the human resource area, have achieved fruitful results.
China highly values the relationship with Singapore and is willing to seek new fields and methods of cooperation to enhance bilateral ties, said Liu.
She said the China-Singapore relations are highlighted by complementary and innovative education and technology cooperations, therefore she put forward the following proposals to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in the two fields:
First, both sides should strengthen communication and training in education, and enrich the contents of exchanging and training projects.
Second, both sides should increase communication between the young people to consolidate the basis of China-Singapore relationship.
Third, both sides should expand the cooperation between educational institutions, increase high-level exchanges and communications between higher learning institutions.
Fourth, both sides should deepen the cooperation in technological field, and upgrade capabilities of technology innovation and serving the development of economy and society.
Meanwhile, Lee spoke positive of the development of Singapore- China relationship. He said that the two countries have developed in-depth cooperation in various fields and both sides are putting education and technology as priorities.
Singapore is willing to join hands with China to deepen and expand the cooperation and communication in these two areas, he added.
Earlier in the day, Liu also visited the National University of Singapore, the Confucius Institute of Nanyang Technological University and Raffles Institution.
During her visit, Liu announced three offers to Singapore's education institutions: First, China will provide 100 scholarships for Singapore teachers to advance their Chinese language study. Second, China will invite 200 students from Singapore's Confucius Institute to join the summer camp in China within this year. Three, China will donate multimedia facilities and software to aid the teaching at Singapore's Confucius Institute.
Liu also met separately on Friday with Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean and Minister for Education Ng Eng Hen.
Liu arrived here on Thursday night for the three-day official visit.
