China and Singapore signed on Friday a revised government-to-government Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on education cooperation.

The MOU was signed by China's Minister of Education Zhou Ji and his Singaporean counterpart Ng Eng Hen, and witnessed by visiting Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong.

The signing of the new MOU, almost 10 years after the launch of the first MOU on education exchanges between the two countries, will further bolster education cooperation in areas such as school twinning programs, school leader and teacher exchanges and professional sharing conferences and seminars.

The MOU also provides for new collaborations in the university sector of the two countries. In particular, it signals strong government support on both sides for the partnership between Singapore's New University and a top Chinese university.

In addition, a joint working group, to be co-chaired by senior officials from the Singapore and China education ministries, will be set up to review and monitor the progress of the collaborations under the MOU.

Earlier Friday, Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong also visited the Confucius Institute of Nanyang Technological University. During her visit, Liu announced three offers to Singapore's education institutions: First, China will provide 100 scholarships for Singapore teachers to advance their Chinese language study. Second, China will invite 200 students from Singapore's Confucius Institute to join the summer camp in China within this year. Three, China will donate multimedia facilities and software to aid the teaching at Singapore's Confucius Institute.

Liu arrived here on Thursday night for the three-day official visit.
